Forum feels Waltair Division is not given its due credit in the past
Railways, February 17, 2010
North Coastal Andhra Welfare and Development Forum has asked the UPA government to include in the Railway budget the merger of Waltair Division with the South Central Railway. Stating that Waltair division had been extended a raw deal in all aspects after it was made part of East Coast Railway headquartered at Bhubaneswar, forum president S Gopala Sastry said the government should not disappoint the people by ignoring the merger demand in the Railway budget to be presented this month.
Gopala Sastry said that Waltair Division was bisected in 1994 with sections of Sambalpur, Titlagarh, Mandirhaaud and Bolangir from Sambalpur division in Orissa. Later in 2003, when new zones were formed, Waltair division spread over 1051km was made part of East Coast Railway.
Gopala Sastry reminded that there was another proposal to create a division at Rayagada with Machkund-Kirandl, Koraput-Rayagada sections with a length of 450 km, bisecting from Waltair Division just to fulfill three divisions criterion for East Cost Railway. He said that the Waltair Division which contributes heavily to the East Coast Railway, had not been given its due share in the allocation of funds in the past while allowing fast track development of Bhubaneswar and other stations in Orissa.
Only few days ago, the BJP has reiterated its demand to merge Waltair Division in South Central Railway.
