Blames ports for handling iron ore and chemicals without precautionary measures
Visakhapatnam Port Trust, May 12, 2010
The police, on Wednesday, arrested the CPI state secretary K Narayana and other leaders and activists of the party while they were trying to enter the Gangavaram Port to express their protest against the pollution caused by the handling of hazardous chemicals of the port without taking proper measures and they were later released. Demanding to save Vizagties from the pollution of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust, the CPI took out a rally from the party office to the Visakhapatnam Port Trust with hundreds of activists and some of the victims of the pollution.
Narayana speaking on the occasion said that the Visakhapatnam Port Trust and Gangavaram ports were responsible for the rising pollution level in the city as they handle hazardous chemicals and iron ore without taking precautionary measures to diminish the diffusion of the coal dust.
Narayana charged the officials of the Pollution Control Board were not initiating any action against them as they were hands in glove with the port authorities. He said industrial development is necessary for the growth of the country but it should not spoil the lives of the common people who are not enjoying the fruits of the development.
