Visakha City, January 16, 2010

Scientific advisor to the Defence Minister, VK Saraswat while inaugurating a control and guidance centre for testing underwater systems on Saturday at NSTL said that it was equipped with advanced facilities like 3-axes motion simulator, programmable fin loading system, 2-axes calibration system with a temperature chamber that would make a lot of difference to the NSTL in meeting its mandate of producing some of the best water weapon and weapon systems for the nation.

The state of the art centre, designed specifically to help speed up the process of development of various underwater systems being developed at NSTL like the autonomous underwater vehicle besides the torpedo project, was constructed at a cost of Rs.14 crores in a plinth area of about 1375 square metres. The centre would bring down the testing time of underwater systems by nearly 60 percent and thus help the NSTL, a laboratory under DRDO, finish and deliver technologies and systems on time.

He said prodding the young generation scientists, the Naval group of laboratories, especially NSTL, with its infrastructure is the best possible destination for them to pursue their yearning to contribute to science. He said that the scientific community that all that is possible, including that of incentives for the good work, within the sphere of the DRDO would be extended, but it was about time that to finish and deliver systems on time in tune with the urgent needs of the nation. The NSTL Director, V Bhujanga Rao said that the NSTL, with this new facility would be able to evaluate the stringent requirements of maneuvers, stability and precision launch of underwater weapons at the laboratory before going for sea trials.
