Stray dog snatches away body of infant
King George Hospital, February 27, 2010
A stray dog carrying the body of an infant into the KGH here on the wee hours of Saturday caused shock and dismay to the patients and their attendants. B Anudradha, wife of an auto rickshaw driver of Saradanagar, Anakapalli was admitted to hospital’s gynecology ward on February 6 and gave birth to a baby boy around 2am early on Saturday morning after a caesarean section.
According to available information, the staff did not inform Anuradha about the baby after the delivery but busied themselves trying to extract a bribe of Rs.500 from her sister, keeping the baby back in the operation theatre instead of taking it to the mother. Around 5am, a stray dog slipped in-incredibly so given the presence of security personnel and snatched the infant away. On seeing this, some patients and their attendants tried to save the baby but the dog carried it around the entire ward before finally dumping it on the first floor. In fact, it was Anuradha who saw the dog enter the room and let out a scream but the KGH staff simply did not react.
However, KGH Superintendent G Santha Rao maintained that no complaints had been lodged against the staff. He said senior doctors would inquire into the incident. However, even before the police could arrive at the scene, the staff wiped away the blood strains on the floor and walls of the theatre. District Collector, J Shyamala Rao had directed the RDO to probe the matter with the help of a team of experts. Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and are investigating.
