Protests against hiking prices of essential goods

In protest against the skyrocketing prices of the essential commodities as a part of nationwide 'Jai Baharo' hundreds of the activists of Left parties courted arrest. Fortunately, there was no untoward incident took place. For more than one hour the protesters nearly 400 held up traffic at Jagadamba junction and Collectorate. The police later released the activists of left parties.

Addressing the gathering, district secretary of CPI (M) Ch Narasinga Rao said that the UPA government that was talking about Food Security Act, was actually practicing food insecurity by slashing subsidy of food grins supplied through Public Distribution System and other fertilizers. The hike in excise duties on petroleum prices has led to an over all price rise.

Narasinga Rao said that the hike in excise duties on petroleum products had led to an all price rise and called for proper supply of essential commodities like rice, wheat, pulses and edible oil etc., through PDS. District Secretary of CPI JV Satyanarayana said that the government was favouring middlemen and looting the consumers and called for strengthening the Public Distribution System. He lamented that the government failed to control the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.
