Chief Minister cautions Brandix on workers exploitation

Directs CEO to take measures to prevent such occurrences

Visakhapatnam SEZ, May 3, 2010

The Chief Minister, K Rosaiah on Monday minced no words regarding the working style of the foreign companies in the State. Stating that there were allegations of Indian workers being harassed by Sri Lankan owners of Brandix apparel company and directed the company authorities to take extra care of their workforce. Inaugurating the Brandix India Apparel City, Rosaiah told its Chairman and Chief Executive officer Ashroff Omar that if such a situation was prevalent in the company, it was not a healthy practice and should be prevented.

Dadi Veerabhadra Rao alleged that Sri Lankan officials were harassing the workers and alleged that the company authorities were not paying salaries to the employees in time and Veerabhadra Rao sought the Chief Minister's intervention. On the industrial development in the port city, the Chief Minister said the Government is offering all infrastructural facilities in the SEZ.

The Minister of State for Textiles Panabaka Lakshmi said the BIAC was established according to the wish of the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister, Man Mohan Singh to set up an integrated textile park in the country. The Central Government has sanctioned Rs.3,140 crores for the ITPs, she said . Six ITPs were sanctioned for Andhra Pradesh at Visakhapatnam, Nellore, Chittoor, Ananthapuram and Mehaboobnagar. To develop the infrastructure facilities in the BIAC, the Centre has released Rs.36 crores, she said.
