Apollo Hospitals to organize national workshop

A two-day national workshop on 'Complex cardiovascular intervention and cardiac surgery' is being organized by the Apollo Hospitals at the Gateway Hotel on Saturday and Sunday. Dr. DK Baruah, senior interventional cardiologist and Director of the Cath lab at the hospital highlighted that Cardiovascular diseases are one of the major causes of death in the world and is emerging as one of the most important causes of death in our country.
He said that increasing incidence of high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, tobacco use, lack of physical activity and lack of health awareness are the major causes. He expressed concern at the growing incident of heart diseases among the youth and attributed it tot he increasing job demands and job stress as a result of rapid urbanization. Dr. Baruah said that the main focus of the workshop would be on coronary rotablation, a per-cutaneous interventional technique by which the blocks inside the coronary artery can be drilled.
Dr Mathew Samuel, director of the cath lab of Apollo Hospitals at Chennai and is among the first few Indians to perform per-cutaneous baloon angioplasty would be the course director for the workshop. Dr. Pravin Chandra for Escorts Hospitals, Delhi and Dr PC Rath from Hyderabad would participate.
