Talks fruitful with major demands being agreed

The scheduled strike by the All India Major Ports Union scheduled to be commenced from January 4 has been called off following their legitimate demands accepted by the Central Shipping Secretary. Sources says that the port management has agreed to pay house rent and other allowances from January 1, 2007. The United Port and Dock workers union general secretary announced the same through a statement.
According to him, port employees will get the benefits from January 1, 2007 on the new scales for a period of five years along with Basic 78.2 percent and on DA 23 percent fitment was agreed by the management. The Visakhapatnam Port Employees Union (HMS) general secretary DK Sarma said on Monday and urged the employees to go for duties as usual from Tuesday morning. He said that the government has favorably acceded the demands of the 11 major ports in the country.
He said on Wednesday evening at 5.30, he will address the employees and workers about the outcome. He said that due to united fight only, the employees and workers could achieve the wage revision term for five year have been achieved. Visakhapatnam Harbor and Port Workers union general secretary, B Ch Masen in a separate statement said. He appealed the workers and employees to be united and achieve more and more victories.
Indian shipping industry would have got hit severely if the strike goes ahead.
