Vizag cloth merchants protests against VAT on textiles

Vizag cloth merchants protests against VAT on textiles. Protest call given by AP Federation of Textile Associations.

Jagadamba Centre, July 11, 2011

Cloth merchants in the city have down the shutters of their shops in protest of the Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed by the Andhra Pradesh Government on textiles. It may be recalled that the Government, on Friday, has brought textiles and sugar under Schedule IV of VAT Act effective July 11, 2011.

The list of textiles that will come under 4% VAT now also includes cotton fabrics, textile made-ups, curtains, zari, embroidery articles and even garments made of handloom and khadi. The protest by the Vizagpatnam Cloth Merchants Association was taken up after a call given by the AP Federation of Textile Associations. A rally was taken up from LIC Building and RTC Complex and ended up at the District Collectorate passing through the busy market areas of Super Bazaar and Jagadamba Junction. Few cloth show rooms such as Chermas and Visakhapatnam Central were forced to be closed soon after they opened.
