TDP sweeps victory in GVMC standing committee election

Telugu Desam Party wins all the seven seats in the GVMC standing committee election

The Telugu Desam Party has swept the standing committee election of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. In an embarrassing defeat to the ruling Congress party, the TDP and its allies has won all the seven seats in the standing committee.

The upset to the Congress party in the GVMC standing committee election was expected as the 11 corporators owing allegiance to YSR Congress Party have decided not to contest in the election. The TDP and its allies - CPI(M) and CPI have 35 corporators, while the Congress is reduced to 26 corporators. The seven elected would serve the five-month term of the panel.

Earlier in the day, TDP district president Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu held a series of meetings to ensure the victory in the election. Ayyana Patrudu met with general secretary Kona Tata Rao, floor leader P Mutyala Naidu and former floor leader Ch. V Pattabhiram several times during the course of the day.

Speaking to reporters after the victory, general secretary Tata Rao said that they would press for strict monitoring of day-to-day affairs of the corporation and will work hard for the five-month term right from day 1 to solve people's problems.
