GVMC Office, June 2, 2011
IT officials from the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation have stepped in to extend their help and support in fixing the various loopholes in the Saukryam software that led to a Rs. 1.8 crore fraud at the Saukryam centre of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC).
Readers may recall that three staffers of the GVMC including were arrested following the unearthing of the fraud last month. Srinivasa Rao, the main accused in the fraud is believed to be still at large. The District Audit Officer and its staff have been working on to determine the extent of the fraud. While initial reports have put the fraud amount to Rs. 50 lakh for the collections of the month of March and April 2011, the amount is a whopping Rs. 1.8 crores for the whole year. Correct figures in regard to the exact fraud amount are yet to be determined.
The fraud became possible because certain areas of the Saukaryam software were open to lower level staff. Added, internal security and firewalls are also weak making open the servers to be prone to easy access. NIC officials are called in to fix the server security.
