Hearing on China clay mining postponed. District Collector gives directions to postpone the meeting to Dy. Collector.
Visakha City, May 9, 2011
Visakhapatnam District Collector J Shyamal Rao directed the Deputy Collector Pola Bhaskar to postpone the public hearing of the AP Pollution Control Board in regard to the grant of lease to mine China clay in the Dumbriguda mandal of the district. The decision to postpone was taken following criticism and on the basis of a report submitted by Paderu Prasada Rao.
The grant of mining was resisted by the tribals in the area itself. Social organizations such as Samatha, an NGO, was also against the grant of mining lease as it will be against to the Supreme Court judgement given in the Samatha - Birla Pericles case. The NGO is saying that only the State Government or its instrumentalities or the tribals themselves by way of constitution of societies are eligible to perform mining in the scheduled areas.
