HPCL erects two Diesel Hydro Treating reactors to produce Euro IV diesel
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, March 10, 2011
The Visakha Refinery of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has erected two Diesel Hydro Treating reactors in a bid to produce Euro IV diesel. This new facility will now allow the refinery to produce 2.2 million tonnes Euro IV-complaint diesel per annum. According to the European emission standards of Euro IV diesel introduced in January 2005, a typical passenger car will be releasing 0.50 CO, 0.25 NOx, 0.30 HC+NOx and 0.025 PM gm/km.
The DHT is the equipment responsible for the hydro-treatment of sulphur in the produced diesel and is hence critical equipment in the overall diesel production. Each of the reactors is sized 4.1 meters in diameter and 33 meters in length. The reactor will weigh approximately 335 tonnes.
The new reactors are fabricated at the L&T Hazira facility and are shipped by barge. The equipment is transported to the refinery using hydraulic trailers. The erection was carried out on March 7 and 10, 2011 using 750-tonne capacity crane. HPCL has its crude oil refineries at Mumbai and Visakhapatnam. The Visakha Refinery has produced 8.79 MMTPA of Refinery Crude Throughput in 2009-10.
