Gangavaram, June 2, 2011
The Gangavaram Port Limited (GPL) in its press release denied reports and allegations that the port management was not paying salaries to project affected people, particularly those from the Dibbapalem village, as part of rehabilitation and resettlement package.
The release said that all beneficiaries under the rehabilitation and resettlement package employment with the company are getting their wages as per the statutory requirements. In fact, the port said that it has recently increased the wages for the employees so as to be complied with the Shops & Establishments Act. The Labour Commissioner is reported to have ratified that the salaries being paid by Gangavaram Port are as per the legal requirement.
The release said that the port was depositing the salaries in the bank accounts of the beneficiaries without any delay. Reports in recent months say that the employees however have refused drawing the salaries deposited in their banks for the past few months saying that the amount being paid to them was very less compared to other industries.
