Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation presented with JNNURM award under Best planned habitat category. This is GVMC's third year in a row to win the award.

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has won the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) award for its improvement of slums and providing all basic amenities under the Basic Services for Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme. This is the third year in a row, the GVMC has won the award. The award presented was under the BSUP - "Best planned habitat" category for developing housing on the outskirts in a planned manner with BRTS, electricity, school zone and recreation zone.
The award was presented at the anniversary celebration of JNNURM was held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Though the award was to be presented by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, he had to leave the meeting midway to attend an urgent meeting. The award was accepted by city mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao and GVMC Commissioner B Ramanjaneyulu by Union Ministers Kamal Nath and Kumari Selja.

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluvalia, Union Minister of State for Urban Development Saugat Roy, Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration Minister M Maheedhar Reddy, Principal Secretary Vijay Kumar, Andhra Pradesh Housing Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana and JNNURM Committee member and Visakhapatnam North MLA Tynala Vijay Kumar, GVMC Chief Engineer B Jayarami Reddy participated in the event.
