A Dossier on Visakhapatnam
GVMC serves property attachment notices to defaults. Total demand from assesses at Rs. 136 crores.
GVMC Office, March 21, 2011
Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC)) Commissioner V N Vishnu said that the corporation has served property attachment notices to about 600 defaulters of property tax in the GVMC limits.
The tax collections have been at Rs. 51.7 crores against the demand of Rs. 136 crores from 3.2 lakh assesses. March 31, 2011 is the last date for the payment of property tax for the financial year. It appeared tax payers are reluctant to pay property tax considering that there is a whopping increase of property tax rates this year. Several revision petitions are filed while few tax payers and welfare associations have field suits in courts saying the tax rate hike is unjust.
GVMC said that it is actively processing the revision petitions but welfare associations say the Corporation is doing the review in a mechanistic manner and is not even reading the petitions of the taxpayers completely. They say that the corporation is forcefully making the tax payers to pay the tax or risk attachment of the property.
