GVMC General Body puts off decision on Hinduja power plant. Approves bid of Ramki for integrated solid waste management.
GVMC Office, August 17, 2011
The General Body of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) that met on Wednesday has put off a decision in regard to two issues.
With members raising objection on the Hinduja power plant that is coming up at Devada that is within GVMC limits, the decision to give it NOC was put off for the time being. The power plant is expected to come up on 1123 acres of land and uses sea water. The resolution to setup an ashpond in 2.6 acres of land at Appikonda was also put off.
Apprehension was raised by Pendurthi MLA P Rameshbabu saying that there was no plan given and the impact of setting up an ashpond in the village was not determined. Further, he also said that the NOC should not be given unless the compensation and jobs to the villagers was completely sorted out.
The GVMC body has approved the Rs. 1809 a tonne tipping fee for garbage made by Ramki Enviro Engineers as against the one quoted by Shriram EPC which was at Rs. 2400 a tonne. Now that the approval by Municipal Corporation is given, the proposal will be sent to the State Government for its consideration. Municipal Commissioner B Ramanjaneyulu said that the outsourced workers of the corporation will be taken by the company and will be paid salaries as per the labour laws. The Commissioner said that having an integrated waste management system is essential for cities with a population of over five lakh people as per Supreme Court orders.
