A Dossier on Visakhapatnam
Municipal Commissioner Ramanjaneyulu travels to airport in an auto, setting up an example of no-vehicle monday
Visakha City, December 12, 2011
Municipal Commissioner B Ramanjaneyulu who introduced the no-vehicle Monday for employees of the GVMC set up an example by taking an auto rickshaw to the airport. Ramanjaneyulu normally pedals to office every Monday instead of using the government vehicle with the objective of raising awareness on vehicular pollution, saving petrol as well as to lead a healthy life.
The Commissioner and GVMC Mayor are to receive an award at New Delhi Tuesday for housing taken up under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission. Since the airport is 15kms away from his residence and it is difficult to pedal all the way, the Commissioner said that he has decided to take the auto. Speaking to reporters, Ramanjaneyulu said that it helped him understand the traffic issues faced by people, especially at NAD Kotha Road Junction. Some of the hurdles causing obstruction to smooth flow of traffic would be removed once he comes back from New Delhi. He also said that the 8km stretch of service road from Tatichetlapalem to Kasi Visweswara temple would be a motor vehicle free zone from 5 am to 7:30 am. The stretch would become the third no-vehicle zone in the city.
The Commissioner and Mayor would receive the award from Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. The Commissioner said that he is proud that Visakhapatnam was identified and got the national recognition.
