The Communist Party of India activists staged a dharna in front of the District Collectorate demanding the state government to allot the Obulapuram and Bayyaram iron ore mines to the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

A memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister through the district Collector. CPI leaders JV Satyanarayana Murthy, M Pydi Raju, AJ Stalin, G Vaman Murthy, A Vimala and K Satyanjaneya were among those who took part in the dharna. They demanded the Obulapuram mines to be allotted to the Steel Plant since it is established that former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy who owns the mines made huge profits through illegal methods of mining the ore. The CPI leaders also said that the central government has cancelled the lease given to APMDC for Bayyaram mines in Khammam district.
